Latin Lovers

In a recent trip to London, I discovered that Latin phrases are more prevalent in Great Britain, especially in connection with matters of royalty. It seems many of the buildings occupied by the royal family (including Buckingham Palace) have the letters “ER” displayed prominently, as do the royal mail trucks and other royal properties. Upon questioning the Palace Guard, I was informed that these letters stood for “Elizabeth Regina”. “Is that the Queen’s middle name?” I asked. “No” replied the Guard. “Regina means Queen (you bloody tourist).”

So there you have it: Regina is Latin for “the Queen.” And Rex, of course, means “the King.” (Anyone know her middle name?)
