These Are Not Bonus Points!

Scoring points is the object of the game in basketball and football, but driving is more like golf; the low score wins.  In Pennsylvania, when you accumulate 6 points on your driving record you are required to attend driver improvement school; successful completion results in the removal of 2 points.  If your driving record later goes back up to 6 points you are required to attend a departmental hearing with the Department of Transportation which can result in the suspension of your license.  A third accumulation of 6 points can result in a suspension of up to 30 days.

We often receive questions asking how many points attach to each individual offense under the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code.  The following chart illustrates some of the more common penalties:
