Postscript: The Inn at Rest!

On August 20, 2000, the King of Prussia Inn, which had been an inaccessible patch of historical architecture completely surrounded by high-speed highways, was moved about one-quarter of a mile to a sylvan setting on Bill Smith Boulevard. After the move contractors went to work on the shell of a building, and today it is home to the King of Prussia Historical Society and the King of Prussia Chamber of Commerce.

The restoration has been accomplished with extraordinary care, and as you visit the tract of one and a half artfully landscaped acres, it is nearly impossible to think of the Inn anywhere else. It is not everyday that we pick up 510 tons of stone, wood, and mortar and move it to a new neighborhood.

We are all the richer for the preservation of this lovely 18th Century Inn, thanks to many years’ tireless efforts of Carl Schulthies, M.D. of the Historical Society and Albert Paschall of the Chamber of Commerce. If you care to experience extreme contrast, on your next trip to the King of Prussia Mall/Plaza reward yourself with a slight detour; go east on Gulph Road from its intersection with Route 202 to the first light; then left onto Bill Smith Boulevard a short distance. There it is, on the right, modestly revelling in its rebirth, with nary a thought of the high-pressured world it left behind, just over the hill.
